Using social media as a SciComm platform

With the growing development in social media, there is a challenge for science communicators to stay up to date with the changes in social media ecosystems, but also adapt their content to be relevant and engaging for the various audiences that use the different types of social platforms.

As I am developing my identify as a science communicator I am trialing various approaches using Twitter and Instagram for my various audiences.

From what I've found, depending on the 'generation' of science researchers and industry, there is significant audiences on both platforms. Instagram tends to attract younger, early career researchers with large populations of PhD students, whilst Twitter has a wider audience of researchers starting from early career researchers through to more established professors.

Institutionally (in this instance Universities, science projects and Science Research Centres and Research Councils), Twitter appears to be the main social media platform of choice, with fewer numbers utilising Instagram and Facebook, and even fewer actively using LinkedIn.
